In 1986, the play toured cities in US and Canada.In 1989, the group took the play on a tour of east European countries of Soviet union, East Germany, Hungary, and Yugoslavia. The play was staged at different venues during a tour of Western Europe in 1980. The play initially generated a huge controversy, but has been considered a success in the following years. The first performance of this play was at Bharat Natya Mandir in Pune on 16 December 1972. Its time to say goodbye to a legend who transformed the Indian literary landscape, particularly in the field of theatre creating a niche for it on the world map.Tendulkar based his play on a 1863 story by author-historian Moroba Kanhoba who tossed together history and fiction to write Ghashiram Kotwal and saw it as something of a simple morality play. Thats how the world too will remember him. When a news channel called me for a byte on how I would remember him, I said, As one of the greatest Indian writers of the 20th century.
A man who made it a habit winning awards each decade, since 1956 whether it was the Maharashtra State Government Award (which he won thrice), the two Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards, National Film Awards for his scripts and screenplays or the Padma Bhushan Award from the Government of India, for his literary accomplishments. Nor having had the opportunity of working in a play or a film written by him. I feel deprived not having ever met this great writer. Tendulkar also wrote about gay relationships for instance, his Mitrachi Goshta, written in 2001, was inspired by the real life story of an actress whose acting career was ruined after her lesbian relationship became public knowledge. A documentary on that theme, titled Tendulkar Ani Himsa: Aaj Ani Kal (Tendulkar and Violence: Today and Yesterday), was made in 2007.
In fact, some analysts have called him a chronicler of violence in society. He was also criticised for his fearless depiction of sex and violence. Tendulkars bold political and social commentary brought censure from the orthodox and the politically powerful. In fact, Ghashiram Kotwal, a traditional musical performed with modern theatre techniques, brought about a transformation in Marathi theatre that has stayed. Sakharam Binder dealt with the theme of female subjugation and his musical, Ghashiram Kotwal(1972), made a political comment on the rise of the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra, through a parable of 19th century Maharashtra. Hypocrisy was also explored in his play, Kanyadaan. His play Kamala, (1981) which was based on a real life story, talked of the sleaze and the hypocrisy of the middle class. ( Sakharam Binder 1972, Nishant 1975, Manthan 1976 and Umbartha 1981) about the struggle between the classes and the sexes, as well as about corruption in political and personal lives. He wrote about the exploitation of women and womens activism He exposed the political hegemony of the rich and expressed the angst of the common man very powerfully Tendulkars was one of the strongest radical political voices in Maharashtra. The issues he dealt with in them, the dominance of the male sex and political corruption, are still as relevant today as they were then.
His two most famous plays, Sakharam Binder and Ghashiram Kotwal, written in the early 70s, are still the most performed Indian plays world over. He observed social upheavals and wrote narratives that remained relevant half a century later. Many of his own works have been translated into English and performed abroad (as in the Vijay Tendulkar Festival of Plays, held in New York, in 2004), as well as in various Indian languages.

In a career spanning five decades, Vijay Tendulkar wrote a biography, 27 full length plays, 25 one act plays, two novels, five short story anthologies, 15 screenplays, 16 plays for children and five volumes of literary essays and social criticism! Apart from this, he also translated plays, novels and biographies into Marathi. What else could one expect of a man whose love affair with the written word began at the tender age of six, ending only with his death at the age of 80 He was totally wedded to his art and worked at it with a single-minded, almost manic focus. A few hundred words cannot do justice to a man whose prodigious talent and output has confounded even the most prolific of writers.
